WESTCHESTER, N.Y. - Westchester train commuters will have more opportunities to get some peace and quiet when Metro-North expands its quiet car program next month to include all peak trains on the Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines.
Starting April 2, the last car of all inbound trains to Grand Central Terminal during the peak morning hours and the first car of all outbound trains during the peak evening hours will be designated quiet cars. Reverse peak trains are not included in the program, which Metro-North has dubbed the Quiet CALMmute.
Metro-North introduced about 18 quiet cars in the beginning of January. In a press release Tuesday, it said it will expand the program due to popular demand.
In November, Metro-North surveyed 4,388 New York riders based on a trial of the quiet cars. Of the riders aware of the trial, 90 percent said they were satisfied and 82 percent said they would like to see quiet cars expanded to all peak trains.
Passengers on quiet cars are advised not to use their cell phones, to disable sound features on computers and other electronic devices, conduct conversations in subdued voices and use headphones at a volume that cannot be heard by fellow passengers.
To enforce these procedures, conductors pass out Shhhhhh cards as needed, which explain the rules of etiquette in English and Spanish.
