The new members of the junior board will be tasked with fund-raising, helping the organization evolve and bringing more awareness of the Boys and Girls Club and its mission statement to help children.
Quay Wallace Watkins, executive director of the Boys and Girls Club, said that the formation of the junior board was something the club has sought for a long time. She noted the money raised by the board will be used for very specific needs at the club.
“Our club currently serves local kids between the ages of 6 and 18. Installing a Junior Board enables us to engage a different segment of our community, attract younger supporters, as well as, introduce young professionals to highly impactful non-profit service,” she said in a statement. “
Candice Pinn, the chair of the Boys and Girls Club Board, said that forming a junior board made sense with the amount of young professionals in the city. Many of the new members are those that have been positively affected by the organization in the past.
“We have so many dedicated young professionals hoping to provide meaningful philanthropic service,” she said. “As members, they will have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills while giving back.”
Steve Miller, who was a longtime member of the Boys and Girls Club, said that he was pleased to see the organization continuing to grow, despite the financial limitations most municipalities seem to be facing.
“I went there on and off for almost a decade, it was a great place to spend time after school,” he said. “A lot of organizations and local governments are under a lot of strain, it’s nice to see such a great cause thriving.”
Although the inaugural class of junior board members is finalized, Erica Aisner, a founding member, noted that they will continue looking to swell their ranks.
“The Junior Board of Directors is a new way to network, fundraise, give back to the community, and more importantly to have fun,” she said. “We’re seeking other energetic young professionals who want to socialize and support kids.”
