New Tappan Zee Bridge Lane Closures Go Into Effect

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- It will be slow going on the Tappan Zee this weekend as crews prepare for the next big traffic shift, so leave a little extra travel time, the state Thruway Authority says.

Work on the demolition of the deactivated toll plaza on the Tarrytown side of the Hudson span continues after a cashless system took effect last month.

Instead of having to stop or slow down, drivers can pay through its new electronic toll collection system, either through EZPass or by mail.

The system registers EZPass holders as they go by, and takes a picture of license plates of others who don’t have EZPass.

Crews will be removing concrete barriers in order to create four unobstructed lanes for travelers on the southbound side of Route 87/287.

This will mean that certain lanes will have to be closed throughout this weekend.

Specific closure times are:

  • On Friday, May 13, starting at 9 p.m. and ending at 8 a.m., Saturday, May 14, the right two lanes of the southbound thruway will be closed at the site of the former toll plaza.
  • From 8 a.m. Saturday to 2 p.m. Monday, May 16, one right lane will be closed near the former toll plaza.
  • And on Monday, one right lane will be closed from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the southbound thruway from Exit 11 to the bridge.

The next shift in traffic is expected to take place on Friday, May 20.

All lane closures are subject to change due to traffic, weather, or emergency situations, the authority said.

Meanwhile, site preparation work on the state Thruway Authority’s new maintenance building in Tarrytown has begun.

The state-of-the-art building will give Thruway administrators and other personnel such as emergency response teams, welders, and painters, instant access to the bridge, the authority said.

Maintenance workers are currently using a facility near Exit 12 in West Nyack.

The new building is expected to open in 2018.
