SCARSDALE, N.Y. Harry Reynolds has told the Scarsdale League of Women Voters "thanks, but no thanks" for its invitation to take part in a Scarsdale Village Board of Trustees candidate forum.
The forum is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at the Scarsdale Public Library.
Reynolds, who is on the March 20 ballot in a challenge to the Scarsdale Citizens Non-Partisan Party candidates, said in an open letter to the LWV that he decided to withdraw from the event after learning the forum "will not be about the CNC (Citizens Nominating Committee) or how it operates," according to an email he said he received from the LWV.
"In consequence of my discussions with others concerning the history of my communications with the LWV," he wrote, "in consequence of the purpose of my nomination by the independent body 'Scarsdale Outs Secrecy In Elections,' and finally in consequence of my obligation to the 162 signatories of my petitions, I have decided irrevocably that I will not appear at the forum."
Reynolds told The Daily Scarsdale, "I have happily used my candidacy for trustee as a platform to rid the non-partisan system of the indefensible secrecy it uses in its selection of nominees to public office. If the non-partisan system were not infatuated with secrecy, I would not have run but would have tipped my hat in favor of its three nominees in the trustee race. ... On the other hand, the three non-partisan nominees support secrecy and on that ground alone, they lose a tip of my hat."
The Scarsdale League of Women Voters did not respond to requests for comment.
