WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. Scarsdale Police Chief John Brogan was in the right place at the right time on Friday, stopping a burglary suspect just minutes after the crime was interrupted.
A Scarsdale communications officer notified all units of a hotline message from White Plains about an interrupted burglary on Cushman Road north of the Scarsdale border.
A few minutes after hearing the description of two suspects and a vehicle, Brogan who was off-duty at the time stopped a Hispanic man on Greenacres Avenue. The man was wearing a red shirt and blue pants that matched the description of one of the suspects.
Brogan interviewed the man, Andres Torres, 30, of Queens, at the Hitchcock Community Presbyterian Church before advising the White Plains police. White Plains officers arrived at the church and took Torres into custody. He was charged with burglary.
Brogan began his career with the Scarsdale Police Department in 1978, working his way from patrol officer to patrol section commander before being promoted to chief of police in 2002.
