SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Faculty members of the Hoff-Barthelson Music School in Scarsdale will join internationally known artists for a pair of concerts as the 2013 Artist Series continues.
Flutist Donna Elaine will present “Music for Massed Flutes,” a show featuring a combination of guest, faculty and student artists at 8 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Greenville Community Church, 270 Ardsley Road, Edgemont. A week later, jazz pianist William Komaiko will play a tribute concert at the school, 25 School Lane, Scarsdale, dedicated to jazz pioneer Dave Brubeck, who passed away in December.
Elaine, an instructor at the music school, is known for her creative programming, which will be illustrated during the performance. The program includes a combination of works transcribed for flute ensembles and contemporary pieces. The concert will also feature piccolos and Edmund Niemann on piano. The concert will feature commentary from Elaine, as well as multimedia additions.
In 1991, she premiered a work on the Newly Published Music Concert at the National Flute Association Convention in Washington, D.C., and again performed and taught for the Pedagogy Forum at the convention in 1999. She is currently the principal flutist for the New Amsterdam Orchestra.
In the second performance, Komaiko will be joined by faculty artists Steven Buck on piano, Ed Palermo playing alto saxophone, flutist Joe Piscitelli and guest artist Dick Sarpola on the double bass. The program will feature compositions by Brubeck, and will highlight the works of Ahmad Jamal, Erroll Garner, Art Tatum and Dorothy Donegan.
Komaiko, who was educated at the Juilliard School, received a commission from the National Symphony Orchestra and has performed with countless orchestras and conductors around the world.
General admission will cost $18 for each performance. Seniors will be charged $15 and students can get in for free. To make reservations, call (914) 723-1169 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
