SCARSDALE, N.Y. A chilly wind blew despite a clear, sunny sky Friday afternoon as Mayor Miriam Levitt-Flisser led Scarsdale's annual celebration of Arbor Day outside Village Hall.
Flisser talked about the importance of trees to Scarsdale, which has been named a Tree City USA for 29 straight years by the Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.
"Today we are planting trees here at Village Hall to replace those that we have lost during the last several storms," Flisser said in prepared remarks.
The two young Thornless Honeylocust trees were already in the ground as Flisser led a quartet with ceremonial shovels to pose for photos. She was joined by Dan Hochvert of the Friends of Scarsdale Parks, Superintendent of Parks, Recreation, and Conservation Suzanne Busby and Eric Gerringer, deputy superintendent of Public Works.
"The Honeylocust is a perfect tree for the Village Hall median," Flisser said. "It is a fast-growing tree with fragrant spring flowers, and its delicate, open silhouette lets grass grow underneath. The Honeylocust is also tolerant to pollution, salt and drought and can adapt to a wide range of soils."
Flisser said that planting the trees "Is an act of responsibility to our neighbors here and in the global community."
