Scarsdale Ready to Handle Hurricane Irene

SCARSDALE, N.Y.  – Scarsdale Fire Department Firefighter Scott Damon and the rest of the department prepared all day Friday in the anticipation of Hurricane Irene possibly hitting the area this weekend.

“This could be a real mess,” said Damon Friday evening.

Fire Department personnel will be ready for whatever the storm system brings to village.

An emergency center will also be set up beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday depending on the track of the storm.

“(We’re) as ready as we can be for something like this,” said Captain Jeffrey Gaskin.

Showers and thunderstorms are predicted after noon Saturday with a high near 81. Rainfall amounts between a quarter and a half inch are possible.

Tropical storm conditions are expected with hurricane-like conditions possible Saturday night. Rain could be also be heavy at times.

Winds are expected to blow 23 to 28 mph increasing to between 35 and 45 mph. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph. More of the same is expected for Sunday with tropical storm conditions expected, and more hurricane conditions possible, with rain mainly before 4 p.m. Wind gusts have the possibility of reaching 80 mph and an excess of 4 inches in rainfall possible. Temperatures are forecasted to be 75.

There will be a slight chance of showers before 10 p.m. Sunday night under partly cloudy skies with a low around 59. Conditions will be breezy with northwest winds at 18 to 21 mph. These will then decrease between 8 and 11 mph.

Residents can then expect a sunny Monday in Hurricane Irene’s aftermath.
