Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish holiday also known as the Festival of Lights, remembers the time the first Holy Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed, said Gary Katz, executive director of Scarsdale Synagogue Temples Tremont and Emanu-El. The holiday also celebrates the miracle that the temple's one-day supply of lamp oil lasted for eight days, he said.
While Hanukkah begins Saturday night, the synagogue has a special Hanukkah service Sunday morning, Katz said.
“Sunday's Hanukkah service is mostly for families with children, and could draw a crowd around 300 people," Katz said. "There will be activities, games and music so that the children can have a good time."
The synagogue also will have a special service on the seventh night of Hanukkah, Dec. 14, to officially welcome Jeffrey Brown as the Reform Jewish congregation's third senior rabbi since it was founded more than 50 years ago.
Brown came to the synagogue in July to succeed Rabbi Stephen Klein, who served as the congregation’s senior rabbi since 1982 and continues his affiliation as rabbi emeritus.
Scarsdale Synagogue is at 2 Ogden Road in Scarsdale. Sunday morning's service will begin at 11 a.m., and the Dec. 14 service will begin at 7:30 p.m.
