Scarsdale Residents React To Saturday Mail Cancellation

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Residents of Scarsdale and Eastchester don’t seem overly concerned that the United States Postal Service will end Saturday mail deliveries in early August.

The USPS reported a net loss of nearly $16 billion last year as Americans continued to rely more on email and less on the postal service. Packages will still be delivered on Saturdays, but first class mail will be delivered on weekdays only.

Eastchester resident Carl Schwab said “snail mail” has become obsolete as we move further into the Digital Age.

“I don’t think a lot of people will notice, to be honest. It’s one less trip down to the mailbox each week,” he said. “Everything can be done online now. I pay my bills and I can correspond with whomever I want easier than I could otherwise.”

According to reports, the cost cutting measure may save the USPS as much as $2 billion a year. In the past two years, the organization has lost more than $20 billion.

Patrick R. Donahoe, the postmaster general and CEO of the USPS, issued a statement earlier on Wednesday regarding the financial woes of the service.

“Our financial condition is urgent,” he said. “The Postal Service is advancing an important new approach to delivery that reflects the strong growth of our package business and responds to the financial realities resulting from America’s changing mailing habits.”

The new delivery schedule will begin during the week of Aug. 5. Any post offices that currently are open on Saturdays will remain on the same schedule.

Scarsdale resident Kaitlyn Walsh had mixed emotions regarding the change, but understood the necessity for it.

“I think it’s a little thing that people won’t realize they miss until it’s gone,” she said. “With everyone using email, it only makes sense that they would have to change things to make some money.”

As of 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, 65 percent of The Daily Voice's readers in Sound Shore who voted in our poll said it was a good idea to eliminate Saturday mail service.
