The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has certified that cleanup has been completed on the formerly contaminated Heathcote Corners site.
Heathcote Corners II LLC performed the cleanup as part of the state’s Brownfield Cleanup Program. The NYSDEC has approved a final engineering report and issued a certificate of completion for the site.
The site formerly contained an inactive service station, two fuel pump islands and a paved parking lot. Prior uses at the site have led to contamination that included leaking underground fuel and waste oil tanks. In 2008, Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) identified the presence of petroleum-related contamination at the site.
According to the report, all soil that was contaminated was excavated down to bedrock and disposed of. All storage tanks were removed and disposed of and residual groundwater contamination was treated by direct application of an oxygen-release compound. Officials also put a monitoring plan in place to assess the performance and effectiveness of the cleanup moving forward. Tests will include sampling and analyzing groundwater.
The final engineering report is available to the public at the Scarsdale Public Library and the NYSDEC in New Paltz.
