Sewer Smoke Testing Starts In Scarsdale

SCARSDALE, N.Y. - The sewers will soon be smoking in Scarsdale as the village conducts a sanitary study.

Beginning on Thursday, consultants retained by the village will be releasing non-toxic, non-staining smoke into several village manholes, which will travel through portions of the sewer system, detecting any breaks or leaks.

Officials said the purpose of the study is to determine locations where excess rainwater and groundwater may be entering sewer pipes and manholes. They cautioned that the test may cause smoke to discharge from roof vents, building foundations, catch basins, clean-outs, downspouts and manhole cover.

The smoke will not enter any home or business that is properly plumped, vented and have water traps that contain water. The entire study is expected to last approximately two weeks. The first neighborhoods to get tested will be East Heathcote, Murray Hill, West Quaker Ridge, Scarsdale Meadows and Quaker Ridge.

Residents have been cautioned that if any smoke enters a house or building, it is an indication that gases and odor from the sewer may also enter. Anyone who encounters smoke has been asked to contact H2M Architects and Engineers by calling (845) 357-7238 ext. 2052.
