Health Department Issues Heat Advisory for Scarsdale

ARMONK, N.Y. — The Westchester County Health Department has issued a heat advisory for Wednesday and Thursday as temperatures may creep into the upper 90s, according to the National Weather Service.

The Health Department advises residents to avoid strenuous activity, drink non-caffeinated and non-alcoholic beverages and take precautions against heat-related illness.

Dr. Sherlita Amler, Westchester County health commissioner, warned that some people, like the elderly and children, should take extra precautions.

"Heat stroke and dehydration can take you by surprise," said Amler. "The elderly, young children and those with high blood pressure, heart disease or lung conditions need to be especially careful to avoid heat-related illnesses. High humidity and some medications can also increase a person’s risk for heat stroke."

The County Health Department also urges residents to stay indoors, preferably somewhere with air conditioning, take a cool shower or bath, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and, if they do go outside, to wear a hat and sunglasses.
