SCARSDALE, N.Y. – The Scarsdale Daily Voice will lead into the new year by counting down, in no particular order, the top 10 stories from 2012.
On Nov. 20, David Mendelowitz, a former Scarsdale High School guidance counselor and dean of students was indicted as a customer in a prostitution and money laundering operation by the New York State Attorney General.
The White Plains resident was one of three “johns” charged with numerous counts of patronizing a prostitute, possession of a controlled substance and hindering prosecution, a class E felony. Mendelowitz was involved in student programs during the time of his alleged misconduct, including the high school’s Drug and Alcohol Task Force, the attorney general said.
Mendelowitz worked as a guidance counselor at Horace Greeley High School from 1986 to 1997 before transitioning to Scarsdale. Superintendents at both school districts denied having any awareness of the alleged illicit activities.
The 180-count indictment charged 19 individuals and one corporation – Somad Enterprises Inc. – with enterprise corruption and various underlying crimes. The 16-month investigation identified Somad as an advertising agency that placed online and print advertisements that promoted prostitution for clients’ businesses.
On Dec. 3, Mendelowitz had his case adjourned to Jan. 7 in White Plains City Court.
