Westchester County government website offers a list of advisories for residents on how best to prepare to prepare for hazardous weather that could include potential power outages or being snowed in at home.

Primary among the more important snow preparations are making sure to remain in contact with elderly and disabled relatives, friends and neighbors, having snow removal equipment and melters (salt, etc.) available. Experts also warn those who may be not be physically fit to avoid over exertion when shoveling snow.

After the snow has arrived, home, business and other property owners should be prepared to remove snow, making sure sidewalks, roadways, fire hydrants and stairways are cleared.

Motorists should clear snow from vehicle windows and roofs before driving and avoid driving on icy roadways or in heavy snowfall unless absolutely necessary. Local municipalities will notify residents of parking and driving restrictions for each village, town and city. Pedestrians and motorists should avoid walking or driving behind snow plows and salt spreaders.

Westchester County recommends that tenants who have no heat or hot water in rental apartments call local building departments or, during after hours, the local police. Those who have non emergencies should call the 211 helpline -- emergencies should be reported at 911.

In case of power outages, remember to be prepared with candles, flash lights, water, generators, battery powered radios and other emergency equipment. Con Edison and NYSEG crews are prepared to respond to any outages that may occur.

Con Ed customers can report downed power lines, outages and check service restoration status by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633) or visiting the Con Ed website

When reporting an outage, customers should have their account number available, if possible, and report whether their neighbors also have lost power.

In the event of downs downed electrical wires, Con Ed warns not to do go near them and to treat them as if they are live. Never attempt to move them or touch them with your hands or any object. Be mindful that downed wires can be hidden from view by tree limbs, leaves or water.
