Breaking News: Schools Announce Delayed Starts For Thursday

Marian C. McKenna, 87, Former Scarsdale Resident, Professor Emeritus

CALGARY, ALBERTA - Marian C. McKenna, a former resident of Scarsdale, died June 28. She was 87.

McKenna was born July 3, 1926, in Scarsdale, N.Y., to John F. McKenna and Margaret Hanfling McKenna. She graduated from St. Gabriel High School in New Rochelle, N.Y., and studied at the New York College of Music from 1944 to 1946. She received a B.S. in Music from the Columbia Teachers College in 1945 and attended Columbia University where she received her MA in History in 1950 and her Ph.D. in American History in 1953 and where she studied under Allan Nevins.

Her academic teaching career in American History spanned more than 40 years, serving as an instructor at Hunter College of the City of New York (1953 to 59); associate professor of American History at Manhattanville College, Purchase, N.Y. (1959 to 66); and in the History Department at University of Calgary as associate professor (1966 to 68), professor (1968 to 94) and professor emeritus 1994 until her death. She was a member of the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians and the American Society for Legal History.

McKenna is survived by her sister, Sister Mary Margareta, RDC; brother, John F. McKenna, Jr.; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; and cousin, Marie Hutcheson. She was predeceased by her parents; and sisters, Sister Margaret McKenna, SC, and Marie McKenna Fallon.

Calling hours are Thursday, July 10 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the McMahon, Lyon & Hartnett FH , 491 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church with interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
