The fire was uncovered about 2:34 a.m., Tuesday, when firefighters were arriving at the firehouse and a woman approached them with a child who was in need of medical treatment from the fire next door, said Bedford Hills Fire Chief Joseph Lombardo.

Firefighters quickly uncovered an electrical fire that started between a residence on the second floor of the building and a dry cleaner on the first floor, Lombardo said.

The occupants of the apartment were able to escape without serious injury, but their home received heavy damage despite firefighters being able to put out the blaze within 20 minutes, he added.

The dry cleaners also received fire and smoke damage.

"It's really hard anytime, but especially this time of year when a family loses their home," Lombardo said. "We could see presents in their boxes. It's sad."

The department contacted the Red Cross who was assisting the family with finding housing and other needed items, he added.

Bedford Hills was assisted by the Mount Kisco Fire Department, with the Bedford Fire Department on standby. Also on scene were the Bedford EMS, Bedford Ambulance, and Bedford police. The Westchester County Cause & Origin unit will handle the investigation into the fire.
