MOUNT VERNON, N.Y. -- An innocent bystander who was shot by New York City Police Department officers who were conducting an undercover operation Friday has died from his injuries authorities announced Saturday morning.

Mount Vernon Police confirmed that the NYPD was conducting an undercover operation in the city when shots rang out and two men were injured, with the bystander, Felix Kumi of Mount Vernon, suffering fatal wounds.

The victims were taken to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx for treatment; their condition is unknown.

The shooting happened around 4 p.m. on Friday near the intersection of Beekman Avenue and Pease Street. One of the hospitalized victims is confirmed as a suspect in the NYPD investigation. He has not been identified. A second suspect has been apprehended.

According to reports, no officers were injured in the shooting. It is unclear how many shots were fired in the incident, which took place in a residential neighborhood.
