Dobbs Ferry Driver Charged After Scarsdale Crash

SCARSDALE, N.Y – A Dobbs Ferry man was arrested on a drunken driving charge after his car struck a street sign on a private dead end street in Scarsdale, according to police.

Scarsdale Police responded to Fountain Terrace, a private road with no through traffic after a resident reported a car making suspicious noises shortly after 1 a.m. on Saturday.

When police arrived they found a silver Toyota Avalon that had struck a street sign, the report says.

The vehicle had become stuck on the on the edge of the road after partially leaving the roadway. Police believe the driver, Mark Daroczy, 39, then attempted to drive back onto the street, which resulted in the driver’s side front tire being stripped from the rim and strewn across the road approximately six to eight feet away from the disabled vehicle. The Toyota also suffered damage to the front bumper.

According to the report, “Daroczy was standing next to his vehicle, assessing the damage. As patrol approached ... he was having difficulty keeping balance and walked with a pronounced stagger toward the driver’s door.”

Daroczy struggled to remain upright, and police found him swaying to the point of staggering. He lost his balance many times. According to patrol at the scene, he had a strong odor of alcohol on his breath and told them he had “two vodka and cranberry juice" while at a White Plains restaurant.

During questioning, Daroczy stated, “I was driving from White Plains back home to Dobbs Ferry when I got a flat tire, so I pulled over." He appeared to be unable to tell patrol how he got to his current location, and was unaware he was in Scarsdale.

“I live in Dobbs Ferry, right down the street,” he told officers.

Due to Daroczy’s inability to keep steady on his feet, police did not conduct standardized field sobriety tests. An Alcosensor pre-screening confirmed the presence of alcohol on his breath.

Daroczy was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and aggravated driving while intoxicated because his blood alcohol content was greater than .18. Both  are misdemeanors.

He was released and is due back in court on July 11.
