The June 9 accident on Nearwater Lane in Darien left the 33-year-old driver in critical condition. His 2015 Audi A3 was totaled in the crash, and it took firefighters about 30 minutes to extract him from his car, police said.
The man remains in the hospital recovering from injuries that he sustained in the crash, police said Wednesday.
The vehicle was taken back to police headquarters, and last week investigators were able to obtain a warrant to search the car.
"Our main focus was to see if something was wrong with the vehicle," said Sgt. Jeremiah Marron.
The car has three modules that collect data while it is being driven, and Marron said one was destroyed in the crash.
He said there aren't any cables for police to download the data from the other modules, but one company is working on producing one. Audi also sent engineers from Volkswagen of America to inspect the car.
The crash occurred at about 11 p.m. June 9 when the driver was traveling on Nearwater Lane, police said. The car left the roadway as he approached a turn, police said.
The car went airborne, hit a stone wall and then hit several trees before landing on the ground,, police said. The motor was completely separated from the rest of the car, police said. The driver received multiple life-threatening injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Speed was likely a factor in the accident, Marron said. However it is unknown whether it was the only factor, or if a mechanical failure, a medical emergency or some other scenario also played a role, he said. The matter remains under investigation.
