Mamaroneck Mother Charged In Death Of 4-Year-Old

This story was updated at 2:15 p.m.

MAMARONECK, N.Y. ? The mother of the 4-year-old boy found dead in his Mamaroneck home Monday has been charged with murder, police said.

Manuela Maria Morgado, 46, was arraigned on a second-degree murder charge in Mamaroneck Village Court late Monday, police said. Morgado was apparently being held without bail at the Westchester County Jail.

Police said they found Morgado "semi-conscious" Monday afternoon after a family member called 911 asking that someone check on her. Her 4-year-old son, Jason, was dead when police arrived.

The cause of death was unknown.

Morgado and the boy's father, Dr. Tim Reish of Briarcliff Manor, were battling for custody of Jason, according to reports.

An employee of JW Tumbles, where the 4-year-old boy attended classes, called the incident a family tragedy and refused to comment. Parents leaving the gym also declined to comment.

Residents of the Boston Post Road apartment were tight-lipped outside the building.  One neighbor would only say many building residents did not know the boy or his mother.

Reish, the boy's father, is a well-known orthopedic surgeon and an attending physician specializing in knee and shoulder work at the Insall Scott Kelly Institute for Orthopedic and Sports Medicine in New York City. He graduated with honors from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and currently lives in a single-family home on Austin Place in Briarcliff Manor that was purchased in October 2010 for $1.75 million.

Reish has two other children, a sixth and eighth grader who attend Briarcliff Middle School. Briarcliff School District officials said they are offering grief counseling.
