Shortly before 1:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 13, officers Marco Ferraro and Jeremy Cartica were dispatched to the southbound lanes between exits 18B (Mamaroneck Avenue / White Plains) and 18A (Mamaroneck Avenue / Mamaroneck / White Plains) where there were reports of a multi-vehicle accident with serious injuries.
According to Mamaroneck Police Chief Christopher Leahy, the officers determined that a male motorist was assisting a female motorist with a disabled vehicle on the side of the road when they were both struck by a tractor-trailer.
Leahy said that Ferraro and Cartica jumped into action, rendering aid to the victims, including the use of a tourniquet. The chief noted that both officers had recently attended a Tactical Casualty Care training through the Westchester County Department of Public Safety, which instructed officers on the proper application of hemostatic dressings and tourniquets.
State police identified the drivers as Bronx residents Alwin Martinez, 27, and Yesenia Camacho, 28. The driver of the truck was identified as Ohio resident Furkat Yuldashev, who was not injured. No charges have been filed against him.
Police said that both Camacho and Martinez suffered life-threatening injuries and they were both transported to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx for treatment. Their conditions were not immediately available on Thursday afternoon.
For their life-saving heroics, Leahy said that both Cartica and Ferraro have been nominated for departmental commendations.
