Shortly after 6 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, a Cohawney Road resident was walking his Bichon, LJ, when an unleashed bulldog began growling at the pair. He continued walking home when he noticed the dog charging when he was about 200 yards past Kensington.
According to the police report, “the bulldog attacked (the victim's) dog, and he fell to the ground at least twice as he was trying to pull the bulldog off his dog.” The bulldog continued harassing the pair, “jumping up, trying to bite the dog” until the man returned home and could contact the police.
The victim suffered minor lacerations to his right hand and left knee while he attempted to thwart the bulldog's attack, though it could not be determined if the injuries were from dog bites or the result of him falling to the ground to defend his puppy.
No medical attention was required for the injuries, although there were several lacerations on the dog, which responding police officers documented. The victim filled out an animal bite, scratch contact form for the Department of Health's report.
Police were able to apprehend and calm the bulldog before contacting his owner, who promptly returned home. According to the dog's owner, he drove his son to basketball practice several hours earlier, leaving the bulldog outside in a gated patio.
“The owner stated he was unaware how his dog would have been able to get over the wall surrounding the patio, but suggested it may have had to do something with all the snow that has been piling up,” officer Brett Purpura said in the report. “(He) stated his dog has never done this before and has never left the property without being leashed.”
The attacking bulldog had all the necessary shots, and poses no threat to the community, although he has to be confined indoors due to public health law until an Animal Control officer contacts the owner. The owner was issued an appearance ticket for having a dog at larch, which is a violation.
