It will be a complete, department-wide effort this year, with all three volunteer companies, explorers and the career staff participating at the annual event, which will be held, rain or shine at the department’s Station 3 at 56 Crossway.

The theme of this year’s Fire Fair is “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives, Test Yours Every Month.” Events and educational efforts will center on the importance of changing batteries in smoke detectors, which should be changed whenever the clocks are changed, according to the department.

As always, the fair will include the “smoke trailer,” a simulated house with a smoke machine that allows children to experience firsthand what it is like to crawl through a smoky room during a live fire. There will also be information and videos disseminated regarding residential fire sprinklers, extinguisher and apparatus demonstrations, awards for the fire-prevention poster contest and other hands-on-activities designed to educate children and parents alike.

This year, there will be a school program in advance of the Fire Fair. Firefighters will be visiting first-graders on Friday, Oct. 17, to educate students about the importance of fire safety and prevention. There will also be a safety video, fliers and firefighters will hand out safety checklists that can be filled out at home and returned the next day at the fair for prizes.

Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire escape ladders and other fire safety equipment will be on sale at the Fire Fair. For the first time, residents can bring their extinguishers for a free inspection.

The Scarsdale Fire Department’s annual fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, at the Crossways Fire House.
