Scarsdale Marks Fire Prevention Month With Fair

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – It’s Fire Prevention Month and the annual Scarsdale Fire Fair is returning to the Crossway Station on Oct. 20.

The event, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be held - rain or shine - at the department’s Station 3. All three volunteer companies, explorers and the career staff will participate at the fair.

This year’s theme is “Find Two Ways Out! Be Part of the 2012 Fire Prevention Team and Learn to Save Lives in Your Community.” It will focus on residential fire-escape planning, and the importance of having multiple ways out of every room in a house.

The fair will include a “smoke trailer,” a simulated house with a smoke machine that allows kids to crawl through. There will also be information and videos regarding residential fire sprinklers, extinguisher and apparatus demonstrations, a fire-prevention poster award ceremony and other hands-on-activities to educate children.

Fire personnel will visit first-graders at all Scarsdale elementary schools on Oct. 19 They will show a safety video and discuss fire prevention strategies. Students will receive coloring books and flyers to bring home, designed to remind families about the fair the following day.

According to Scarsdale Fire Chief Thomas Cain, the department’s goal is for all residents to complete a fire inspection checklist of their homes. The checklist will be handed to students during the firefighter’s elementary school visits and will be available at the fair. The list will warn residents to ensure smoke alarms are working, and remind them to keep a close eye on cooking areas, heating equipment and appliances.

Fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors, fire escape ladders and other fire safety equipment will be on sale at the Fire Fair. For the first time, residents can bring their extinguishers for a free inspection.
