SCARSDALE, N.Y. – A Scarsdale home was burglarized over the weekend, after a live-in nanny mistook the intruders for members of the family that employs her.

According to police, at approximately 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, the Springdale Road family left for the evening, leaving their child’s caretaker home alone in her second story apartment. Several hours later, when she heard rustling downstairs, she mistakenly assumed that it was the family returning home for the night.

The nanny reported that she heard what “resembled the sound of dishes and footsteps, believing at the time that it was the family, and was not alarmed.”

Shortly after 7:30 p.m., she became suspicious of what she was hearing, and upon investigation, observed a beam of light from a flashlight near the master bedroom. After texting the homeowners and discovering they were not in the house, the police were alerted to the burglary.

Upon arrival, responding officers found that the home was entered through a rear sliding glass door, which had only been broken enough to gain access to the lock. Police believe that the intruders spent most of their time ransacking the master bedroom, where jewelry had been stolen from a box, which was later found in the kitchen.

A fire safe, containing personal documents and photos was also taken, but was found on a neighbor’s property on Sunday morning. Detectives attempted to ascertain fingerprint data, but attempts to obtain latent prints were unsuccessful.
