The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies awarded the department an “accreditation with excellence” – its highest honor – as part of the“Gold Standard Assessment program.

According to the commission, only 5 percent of agencies that participate in the nationwide program are CALEA-accredited. Of that minority, only 20 percent receive the “accreditation with excellence.”

The program is voluntary and requires an agency to comply with 484 sets of standards in such areas as policies and procedures, crime prevention, management, support services, community advocacy and personal practices. The agency is required to submit periodic reports to CALEA and undergoes a comprehensive onsite inspection by a team of CALEA assessors.

The Scarsdale Police Department has been accredited since 1990 and has maintained that status for 25 years. This year marks the first time the department has earned an “accreditation with excellence,” which represents 100 percent compliance with the mandatory standards and a minimum of 80 percent to the optional compliances.

“The accreditation is an outstanding honor and achievement for the men and women of the Scarsdale Police Department,” new Chief Andrew Matturro said. “This is a validation of their exceptional work ethic and the highest level of professionalism.”
