Anthony Mrijaj, 18, was arrested on Saturday afternoon after backing his Subaru into a Mercedes while stuck in traffic on Palmer Road, getting out of his car and apologizing before returning to his vehicle and running from the scene of the crime.

According to police, a witness who was walking in the vicinity helped track down Mrijaj by offering a detailed description of the suspect and providing license plate information.

“The operator of the Subaru was described as a young white male with a thin build who was (between) 18 and 21 years of age. (After backing into the Mercedes,) the operator of the Subaru exited his vehicle and stated ‘my fault.’ When the victim requested to exchange information with the young male, the individual quickly got back into his vehicle and sped off away from the accident,” investigating officers wrote in the police report.

When investigators prompted him as to why he left the scene, Mrijaj responded, “that there did not appear to be any damage to the Mercedes, and it wasn’t a big deal.” A further check of his licensed revealed that he had a total of four suspensions on two dates, meaning that he had been driving with an illegal license.

After speaking with the witness and man whose vehicle was struck, police did a Department of Motor Vehicle check of the license plate, which led them to Mrijaj. He was charged with a misdemeanor count of aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident and unlicensed operation, infractions.

Mrijaj was released on $100 bail. He is due back in Scarsdale Village Court on Wednesday morning.
