Scarsdale To Install Red Safety Markers On Village Hydrants

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Fear not, Scarsdale homeowners, the red markers that will soon adorn village fire hydrants are not a warning sign, they’re just a safety precaution put in place by the Scarsdale Fire Department for the winter.

Beginning on Saturday, Nov. 4, members of the department have been busy installing small red markers that rise approximately three feet above the hydrant, ensuring that no matter the weather conditions, firefighters can locate a water source in the event of an emergency.

In total, nearly 1,000 hydrants will be tagged with winter looming.

The markers will be removed by members of the Water Department in the spring, once the threat of snow subsides. Fire officials have also made note that homeowners can help out the department’s cause by keeping the area surrounding a hydrant on their property clear.

“These markers are being installed to enhance public safety. Fire hydrants serve an extremely critical role in the rapid and successful extinguishment of fire, and when accumulated, drifting or plowed snow often results in difficulty locating hydrants, especially at night and during inclement weather,” fire officials noted. “Precious time can be lost searching for a hydrant buried by snow.”
