At approximately 2:15 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Westchester County Police Officer David Sanchez was conducting an inspection of the Arroway Chevrolet-Cadillac dealership on North Bedford Road, when he noticed a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot.

According to police, when he approached the Honda Odyssey minivan as it left the property, the driver failed to pull over, continuing onto Knowlton Avenue before he fled on foot.

Sanchez chased the suspect through multiple backyards before he caught him on Dickson Lane in Bedford. During the ensuing struggle between the two, Sanchez was struck several times, and the suspect attempted to stab him before he could be subdued and taken into custody.

Mount Vernon resident Clare Greenland, 53, was charged on Tuesday night on charges of attempting to murder a police officer, aggravated assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of stolen property, resisting arrest and fleeing an officer in a motor vehicle.

Greenland has a lengthy criminal history and has twice been deported to his native Jamaica.

According to police, they had recently increased patrols around Arroway and other car dealerships recently after there were several larcenies of tires, rims and other car parts overnight. Sanchez was on patrol when he spotted Greenland’s minivan.

A subsequent investigation yielded the knife at the scene, and there were several punctures in his bullet-resistent vest. Officers also discovered a car jack and cinder blocks beneath a pickup truck in the Arroway parking lot. The minivan was determined to have been reported stolen from Scarsdale in September.

Greenland was arraigned Tuesday night in Mount Kisco Justice Court and remanded to the Westchester County Jail. He is due to appear on Wednesday in Bedford Town Court.

"I commend Officer Sanchez for the courage and the skill he demonstrated in apprehending this violent and dangerous suspect," Westchester Police Commissioner George Longworth stated. "He could have been seriously injured, and we are thankful that did not occur."
