SUNY New Paltz Issues Safety Alert After Students Report Sexual Assaults

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- SUNY New Paltz University Police issued a safety alert on Thursday related to two alleged incidents of sexual abuse in New Paltz, 

Police reported on Thursday that two SUNY New Paltz students reported being sexually assaulted. Police suspect a non-student between the ages of 18 and 21 committed the assaults.

In separate incidents, a pair of female SUNY New Paltz students reported being sexually abused by a light skinned Hispanic male, suspected to be a non-student. University police described the suspect as being about 5-foot-8 and 18 to 21years old.

University Police Chief David Dugatkin said the first incident took place outside on the north side of the SUNY New Paltz campus. The second incident occurred in the Village of New Paltz in the area of lower Main Street. Police were not notified of the incidents until several days after they had occurred, Dugatkin said.

A joint investigation by SUNY New Paltz police and the Town of New Paltz Police Department is underway.
