Officials confirmed that at approximately 11:55 p.m. on Thursday night, first responders were dispatched to a Warburton Avenue apartment complex after receiving reports of smoke coming from a first story unit in the Esplande Condominium Complex.

According to officials, an 86-year-old man and 88-year-old woman suffered burns and smoke inhalation and were hospitalized at the Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx overnight. Their condition was not immediately available on Friday morning.

The call to firefighters came when neighbors saw smoke coming from the first-floor apartment. Upon arrival, firefighters found the woman unconscious in a hallway, while the man was suffering from cardiac arrest.

Fire crews swiftly had the blaze knocked down without allowing it to spread to any nearby units. The fire is under investigation, though it is not believed to be suspicious.
