WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – Westchester County police recovered 16 grams of cocaine, 10 glassine envelopes of heroin, 50 pipes used to smoke crack cocaine and arrested five people on related drug charges at an Ossining home this past weekend, police said.
Plainclothes police were watching the home on 59 Morningside Drive Saturday night following reports of suspicious activity.
They heard a woman scream and went to the front door, where they were let inside. Once inside, they said they saw small amounts of heroin and crack pipes on two tables and the living room floor. More heroin, cocaine and drug paraphernalia were discovered after further investigation, police said.
The five people inside the home were arrested at 12:15 a.m. Sunday and taken to Westchester County Police headquarters in Hawthorne.
Michael Moriarty, 39, who lives at 59 Morningside Drive, and Shari Harris, 26, of Cortlandt Manor, were charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a felony. Both were held for arraignment in Ossining town court.
The other three suspects were charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a misdemeanor, and are due to appear in Ossining town court. They are: Tracy Knight, 25, Harrison; Michael Spinelli, 28, of Pleasantville; and Lamar Walker, 36, of Ossining.
There have been more than a dozen heroin-related overdose deaths in northern Westchester and Putnam countes in the last year. Most recently, two deaths were reported in Cortlandt six days apart. Heroin is suspected in both deaths.
Buchanan Police Chief Brian Tubbs said they often work with county police to investigate heroin use. This was the case in 2013, when Buchanan, Peekskill and Yorktown police worked with county police on a four-month undercover investigation into heroin sales in northern Westchester. It resulted in the arrest of 12 people in October.
