The Yonkers resident will be the first woman to serve as a conference leader in New York history. She replaces Sen. John Sampson of Brooklyn.

“I am truly humbled and honored to be selected by my colleagues for this position,” Stewart-Cousins said in a statement. “I look forward to advocating for the progressive agenda that the people of New York have demanded.”

Stewart-Cousins represents the 35th District, including Ardsley, Dobbs Ferry, Elmsford, Greenburgh, Hastings-on-Hudson, Irvington, Tarrytown and parts of Yonkers, White Plains, New Rochelle and Scarsdale. She was first elected to the Senate in 2008, having previously served on the Westchester County Board of Legislators.

Stewart-Cousins said she would work with both Republicans and the independent Democratic coalition “to ensure that the progressive issues that both the Governor and our conference believe in are advanced.”
