Day is opposing incumbent Democrat U.S. Rep. Nita Lowey.
Day, who served with the U.S. Army in Iraq and Afghanistan, said in a video interview with Daily Voice, that he served in the spot where ISIS came into the country. Day initially advocated for close air support of the Iraqi Army and Kurdish military forces.
"Unfortunately, the lack of leadership in D.C. has resulted to the point where now even the president's own top generals are saying you need ground forces in addition to the air strikes," Day said.
Day said there is a difference between getting in expeditionary wars and defending our interests and allies.
"I fought in an expeditionary war," Day said. "I didn't make the decision to send us there. I just had to do it. We have to make sure just because we made mistakes in the past doesn't mean we cannot assertively protect our interests abroad to make sure we have a safe future."
