"After a year of deadly mass shootings, and given the clear connection between domestic violence and gun violence, it is our moral obligation to do everything we can to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people," Cuomo said.

Cuomo's legislation would automatically remove all firearms from those who commit any domestic violence crime.

"This common-sense measure will keep guns away from those who have been convicted of violent behavior and will help make New York a safer state for all," Cuomo said.

Anyone convicted of a domestic violence crime, including misdemeanors, will be required to surrender their firearms, Cuomo said.
