SCARSDALE, N.Y. - The Scarsdale Daily Voice will be compiling candidate profiles before the March 19 village elections. Each candidate was asked the same questions .
William Stern, 72, is running for a vacant seat on the Board of Trustees. He is the CEO of a medical device company that sells ultrasound for the diagnosis of neurological diseases, like strokes. He has a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering and a doctorate in physics from Columbia University. He is president of the Young Israel of Scarsdale synagogue and served a term on the citizen’s nominating committee. He owns a Walgreens and an apartment building in New York City.
Why would you be a good representative in the coming election?
I can listen to all sides of an argument without prejudice and value and weigh every point of view even if it is with great variance from mine. I try to understand the opposing side's viewpoint by putting myself in their shoes.
I feel that my experience in running a sustainable business, dealing with regulatory agencies, and being able to value all points of view is a valuable asset for a trustee.
If elected, what are the three biggest goals you'd work to accomplish?
Preserve the quality of life in Scarsdale, maintain the infrastructure in good repair, encourage growth in local small businesses such as restaurants, specialty shops, which add to the color of the town.
Has the local government made any mistakes or had any oversights that you'd try to avoid? How?
The professional management and staff of the village are truly dedicated and amazing people. They have a wide breath of knowledge and a grasp on what goes on and what the residents want. Some testing of the waters has been done and the staff adjusts to the feedback. The proof of their competency is in the fact that Scarsdale is still one of the most desirable places to live in this area.
One example of an improvement is the quick revision of the generator code, which now enables almost every resident to have access to a permanent backup generator.
What is the best part of Scarsdale?
The safety, the schools, the recreational facilities and proximity to the Big Apple.
