The Times endorsed Cuomo based on his political courage to push New York's stiffer gun laws despite strong opposition in many parts of the state and his ability to get budgets approved on time.

The Times editorial board also threw its support behind Cuomo because it felt Republican challenger Rob Astorino, the Westchester County executive, lacked the proper experience and was "out of step" on several issues facing New York State.

The Times refused to endorse Cuomo during the Democratic primary because it felt the governor failed to make good on one of his biggest promises which was to clean up political corruption in Albany.
