Each year, the League of Women Voters of New York State Education Foundation funds the Students Inside Albany Conference, which introduces high school seniors to the State Legislature and the legislative process.
This year’s conference kicked off on Sunday, with students returning to class on Thursday. Scarsdale Assemblywoman Amy Paulin (D-88) was among the politicians showing the students the ins and outs of life in Albany.
The interactive conference brings together high school students with potential political aspirations from around the state to learn about the New York government and the process by which ordinary citizens can influence policy.
Students were given tips about being a citizen lobbyist and they took a tour of the state Capitol while shadowing assembly members. There were various informative panels and discussions about how one individual can enact change and how the media may influence policy issues.
“Attending the conference provides you with the tools and know-how to make a difference in your local and state governments,” Alexa Salazar, who previously attended the conference, said in a statement. “It’s a great learning experience.”
