SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Poll workers in Scarsdale were impressed and surprised by the steady stream of voters who converged on polling places in the village to cast votes in local, state and national elections.

Scarsdale Village Hall got power back just in time, as voter turnout was strong Tuesday. Lines were kept short by a large staff of poll workers who helped expedite the process for voters.

“The turnout was very high, but it was never overwhelming. We’ve been able to handle it all day,” District 6 poll worker Kathy Hurwitz said. “This presidential election whipped up a lot of emotion. We haven’t seen this kind of turnout since probably the last national election.”

According to election inspector Mark Samtur, who was working the door at Scarsdale Village Hall, nearly 600 people had already voted as of 4:15 p.m. More than 1,000 had registered to vote in District 6 and 7. Samtur said he expects it to pick up even more as residents get off work and make their way to the polls.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive order that allowed residents displaced by Hurricane Sandy to vote outside their normal voting districts led to a record number of affidavits.

“We’ve had about 10 affidavits from people already,” Hurwitz said. “I can’t remember the last time we had any!”

While nearly 3,000 Con Edison customers remain without power in Scarsdale, very few voters were turned away at the polls. From high school students to the elderly, voters made their way out to cast their balllots.

“We try to take care of everyone, even if it means contacting the County Board of Elections and redirecting them to the right place,” Hurwitz said. “We had a lot of older people this year. People with canes, some who even needed help to make their way into the building.”
