GREENWICH, Conn. – Throughout most of the 20th century, the verdant acres of Golden Arrow Farm, a Greenwich property once well-known as Round Hill Stables, were home to frolicking horses. Today, Golden Arrow Farm is for sale for $9.9 million. And there is still plenty of room for horses to frolic there.

Set among more than six private acres, the 10,000-square-foot, five bedroom, six full- and two half-bathroom English country home is situated on the property where Round Hill Stables’ barn and indoor riding ring once stood.

Backcountry trails from the Greenwich Riding and Trails Association -- over stone walls and meandering creeks and around lakes and hillsides -- snake through the secluded property, and all original stone walls, harrows and paddocks have been restored and preserved.

Inspired by 19th century British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and built in 1998 by Matt Matthews, the home's unusually tall windows and French doors open to manicured gardens, mature trees and generous lawns.

Inside, English oak paneling, oversized oak doors, pedimented archways, limestone fireplaces and leaded blown glass windows throughout “capture an essence and history of an earlier time,” said owner Polly McTaggart.

Asymmetrical rooflines make the exterior unique, and the offset front door, five-sided double windows, antique, cracked triple-paned front window, vaulted and beamed ceilings, peaked arches and oversized plinths of each doorway all add to the distinct qualities of Golden Arrow Farm.

There are unique touches throughout, according to McTaggart, whose husband Jim is on the Board of Directors of The Daily Voice.

“When the house and barn were built in 1998, we created a limestone lintel with an arrow in relief, which was embedded in the stone above the front door,” she said.

There is, of course, a pool, and the private and generously sized pool house features a bar area that seats six, as well as changing rooms and shower. And if you’re looking for some extra room, there is an efficiency apartment above the second garage complete with kitchen, shower, washer/dryer, closet and loft.

Each side of the stone wall next to horse paddocks sports commemorations of two famous horses -- Golden Arrow and Huntsman -- from the early and mid-20th century. Additionally, said McTaggart, there is a stable and riding arena.

Original wood from the walls of the old tack room was installed in the two-stalled barn, and four original saddle racks are mounted on the wall as well. Your horses will be delighted with their freedom to wonder in and outside the paddocks --which are attached to each stall -- and double sliding doors provide a constant breeze through the barn.

Now that I think about it I don't even know if I'd like to live in a home like that, sometimes too big homes require some extra maintenance effort.
