Connecticut Elite teammates Kafesha Thomas and Brynn Parsons from Wilton High School competed in the semifinals of the Colgate Women's Games 200 meters on Saturday at the Pratt Institute Field House in Brooklyn.
Thomas took seventh in the semifinal in 27.25 and Parson eighth in 27.66. The athletes who accumulate enough points to place them in the top six overall during the first five weeks of the series earn the right to compete in the finals at Madison Square Garden on Saturday.
Kafesha is currently in fifth place and will compete in the 200 meter finals at the Garden against other finalists from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland. This is the second year in a row that Kafesha will represent Connecticut as the only high school finalist in any event.
"This is a great accomplishment for her," Connecticut Elite coach Kevin Foley said. "Last year she was fourth overall in the 55 meter, and this year she has the opportunity to do as well or better in the 200. I think it really shows her talent and versatility as a sprinter and she deserves it; she works hard."
Parsons finished in 12th place overall in the 200 and while not earning a spot in the finals, she is coming on strong. "Brynn keeps improving each week and you can see it in her times and her confidence," Foley said. "We have some significant meets left on our schedule and the competition will be topnotch. Brynn seems to thrive in those situations, so I expect to see some really great things from her."
Both Thomas and Parsons would rank in the top six in Connecticut in the 200 thus far in 2011, according to an online service that tracks Connecticut high school track and field performances.
