Hudson contractor admits paying Mariner’s bank officer $49,000 bribe

YOU READ IT HERE FIRST: A North Bergen general contractor who owned a West New York flooring company today admitted in federal court in Trenton that he paid a $49,000 bribe to an officer of Mariner’s Bank in Edgewater to renew a $3.5 million line of credit.

Rolando Cribeiro, 49, admitted that he was “financially unqualified” to renew the credit line when he made several payments to a bank officer assigned to his account.

These included a check for $6,500 and cash payments of roughly $5,000 and $3,500.

Cribeiro — who owned CP Building Corp — said he also provided the bank officer with a rent-free apartment in his apartment building in Newark, relieving the bank officer of about $35,000 in rent payments.

U.S. District Judge Peter G. Sheridan scheduled sentencing for Sept. 5.

U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman credited special agents of the FBI and criminal investigators from his office in Newark.

He also noted that the investigation was continuing, under Assistant Assistant U.S. Attorney Zahid N. Quraishi of his Special Prosecutions Division.

CP Building Corp was also known as C&P Floor Covering Inc., C&P Building Enterprises and Roly’s Carpet.
