Pompeo DeRubeis Sr., 83, was trapped inside the home on Lincoln Road on Jan. 24 after a blaze began around 8:30 p.m., the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office said. He and a second person were taken to Mass General Hospital, where he died two days later.

The name of the second victim was not released, but fire officials said they received severe burns.

Fire investigators said the fire appeared accidental and are investigating a "heating appliance" as the cause of the blaze.

Pompeo was born in San Donato Val di Comino, Italy, and moved to Newton when he was 23, his obituary said

He was known for his love of soccer and was a member of the Newton Soccer Club for many years.

A funeral was held earlier this month at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish.
