Newsweek Ranks Six Westchester High Schools Among Nation's Top 500

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Six high schools in Westchester County were ranked among the best in the nation according to Newsweek's list of top 500 high schools this year.

Schools are ranked using everything from achievement information, like standardized test results and SAT and ACT scores to students' college readiness.

Here's how the six school scored overall:

  • Briarcliff High School came in at No. 33. It had a 100 percent graduation rate, with 98.8 percent of its students college-bound. The survey also said 88.2 percent of student were ready for college.
  • Rye High School came in at No. 98. It had a 98 percent graduation rate, with 100 percent of its students college-bound. The survey also said 84.2 percent of students were ready for college.
  • Harrison High School came in at No. 135. It had a 99.2 percent graduation rate, with 95.9 percent of its students college-bound. The survey also said 82.0 percent of students were ready for college.
  • Irvington High School came in at No. 159. It had a 96.8 percent graduation rate, with 95.9 percent of its students college-bound. The survey also said 81.0 percent of students were ready for college.
  • Eastchester High School came in at No. 194. It had a 99.6 percent graduation rate, with 95.1 percent of its students college-bound. The survey also said 79.9 percent of students were ready for college.
  • Westlake High School came in at No. 340. It had a 99.3 percent graduation rate, with 99.3 percent of its students college-bound. The survey also said 77.2 percent of students were ready for college.

The top five schools in the country are Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, in Alexandria, Va.; Academy for Math, Science and Engineering, in Rockaway, N.J.; Stuyvesant High School, in New York City; Union County Magnet High School, in Scotch Plains, N.J; and the Early College at Guilford, in Greensboro, N.C.
