The administration has not yet presented specific changes to the board, but interim Superintendent Tony Daddona and board members are scheduled to discuss the issue during a meeting Tuesday at 7:45 p.m. in Room 300 in City Hall.
Schools were closed Monday to Monday, Oct. 29 through Nov. 5, due to the storm. According to Daddona, there are only a handful of snow days left in the school year.
“Until yesterday’s storm, we hadn’t even had a snowflake, but we’d used up six snow days,” said board Chairman Jack Chiaramonte. “If we have a mild winter, that won’t be a problem. But if you think the winter could be a difficult one, then we’ve got a situation on our hands.”
Although specific proposals have not been discussed, Chiaramonte said the district could consider shortening the February vacation or shifting around staff professional development days.
Two years ago, the district shortened the February break to make up days.
The last day of school is scheduled for June 14 if no makeup days are added. Chiaramonte said he and other board members would prefer not to add days onto the end of the year because it can be “too inconvenient for too many families.”
“We need to have more than four or five snow days in the bank, so to speak,” he said. “We have to decide this quickly because people will soon make plans for the vacations.”
