Scarsdale Almanac: Quaker Ridge

Generations of Scarsdale children have sported their yellow shirts with "Quaker Ridge" printed with blue block letters with pride.

Quaker Ridge Elementary School– the brick building nestled among playgrounds and sports fields on 15 acres of land at 125 Weaver Street– is one of five Scarsdale public elementary schools serving the Quaker Ridge neighborhood of Scarsdale since 1946.

Originally its own school district– Scarsdale District Two–the Quaker Ridge served kindergarten through eighth graders. In 1965, Quaker Ridge became solely an elementary school. A deteriorating slab discovered in 2002 on a wing of the building resulted in a $13.697 million bond passed by the Scarsdale community. Subsequently, a replacement wing, a new main entrance, eight new classrooms, a remodeled and expanded library and a new front office were built.

Robyn Lane is the principal of the approximately 500 students and about 36 teachers at Quaker Ridge Elementary School. Of the student population, 80 percent is white, 12 percent is Asian or Pacific Islander,  four percent is multiracial, three percent is Hispanic and two percent is Black or African American, according to a 2010 New York State Report Card.

In addition to traditional curriculum, special events are woven into the fabric of Quaker Ridge. Each year Quaker Ridge kindergarteners host local veterans on Thanksgiving and Veterans Day, an annual carnival sprawls across the school's parking lot, fifth graders learn to ballroom dance and students celebrate cultural differences by learning about, watching professional performances, and participating in activities from countries around the world at International Days.
