SCARSDALE, N.Y. Scarsdale High School senior Jon Hendler had an idea, and he didn't let a lack of appropriate facilities stop him.
Hendler wanted to create a motorcycle sculpture from junk metal, but the art department at the school was not set up for welding. Nonetheless, Hendler set about scavenging metal pieces, including some wrenches and a couple of circular saw blades for wheels, and made do with portable welding equipment to create his vision.
It wasn't easy, Hendler said. "There was no good way to hold some of the long pieces while I welded them together." But he worked it out, and his creation is on display in a showcase in the school's art wing.
Hendler said he has no intention of pursuing art as a career, though. Next year he will attend the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.
