Scarsdale School Board Trims Capital Projects Plan

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – After discussing a series of proposed capital projects throughout the school district, the Scarsdale Board of Education has reduced the scope of the plan, which will now require a bond of less than $17 million.

The Scarsdale Board of Education will make a final decision on the bond referendum next week.

Earlier this year, the district proposed approximately $20 million in projects that would make important improvements to the district’s infrastructure and student experience. By scaling down projects at the middle and high school, the district would now need to borrow $16,772,000 in total.

At the high school, plans to construct a second floor corridor connecting the new Learning Commons with the renovated library were scrapped, saving more than $500,000, and in the middle school, the new practice room for the orchestra – who currently use the stage as their classroom – will be in a nearby custodian’s office, which would be renovated.

As part of the renovations of a possible Learning Commons, the district is prepared to renovate half of gyms A and B to construct a new, 6,200-square-foot fitness center that will benefit both students and student-athletes.

The Designer-Maker lab, which would be outfitted in the old auto shop, would center on “STEAM” subjects: science, technology, engineering, arts and math, including a complete districtwide technology overhaul.

At Edgewood Elementary, the library would be expanded and relocated further away from the main entrance. This was originally two separate projects, but it was determined that combining them would be most cost efficient for the district.

Other projects the board plans to discuss further include a new multipurpose room at Heathcote Elementary and an orchestra room at the middle school. Trustees expressed support for both projects, but hope to keep the discussion open moving forward.

A final decision on the bond referendum will be made at the Monday, Oct. 6, board meeting.
