SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Quaker Ridge Elementary School in Scarsdale will celebrate its first Heritage Week this year, beginning Monday, March 4.

The week will feature a series of schoolwide activities to promote awareness of global cultures and celebrate the different heritages represented at the school, which is comprised of families with backgrounds in nearly 40 countries.

During the week, the morning announcements will include saying “good morning” in multiple languages, and a dozen different cultures will be showcased by parents. On March 5, Taiko Japanese-style drummers will perform a concert at the school.

Heritage Week will be intertwined with National Foreign Language Week. During Spanish classes, for instance, parents will make presentations about their individual cultures, languages and personal experiences.

On Friday, March 8, there will be a potluck luncheon for faculty and parents that will feature an international menu representing cuisines from around the globe.

“I’m very excited for Quaker Ridge’s first global Heritage Week,” Principal Robyn Lane said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to remind our students of the rich cultural heritage we have right here at Quaker Ridge.”
